As my Mitsubishi PJ gave up the ghost earlier this year and I've been reduced to watching films on a 39" LED TV, I find myself in a dilemma as to whether to get the PJ sorted or just get a larger, UHD TV.
I love my PJ - even though it's about 5/6 years old, it's still pin sharp, has fairly decent contrast ratio for the first 1000/1500 hours of the bulb life, and is still waaaay quieter than anything out there. Granted, it doesn't do 3D and it's not UHD, but it has served me well and still looks good. My original intention was to keep it for another year and see what was around then.
But then I'm thinking that the bulb needs replacing, that's £230 for starters. Plus whatever happened that took the bulb out needs fixing, if it can be, and for all this, I need to ship it to Mitsu in the first place, which isn't going to be cheap to insure, maybe £80/100, and that's presuming I don't need to pay for return shipping. The outer box is huge too, so it'll be based on volumetric weight (code for 'let's charge far more than we normally would do').
So do I just wait and get a large screen TV? I can't afford a UHD PJ, but maybe I can afford a half decent UHD TV? I generally hate modern TVs though, and haven't seen any I like since the Pioneer and Fujitsu screens back when I bought my PJ. Most modern TVs look 'false', and don't have a natural looking picture, even if you turn off all the auto crap. I'm guessing to find a TV I'd like isn't going to be cheap. A TV though would end my worries of trying to completely black out the window during the summer months, and won't (hopefully) heat the room up in summer like the PJ does.
And there's my problem. I have no money to buy a good TV, a good PJ, or even get my PJ fixed!
