Looking for suggestions for upgrade from Arcam FMJ A19. I'd rather not pay for digital bells and whistles I won’t use. I’m looking for an integrated amp for a two channel set up, just turntable and CD player. I realise most amps come with a phono input but I don’t even need that, I use a Graham Slee Reflex M phono stage. A high quality headphone socket would be useful for late night listening. I like the Arcam’s warmer sound, and the fact that its presentation isn’t in your face; I could listen to it all day. And often do. My listening room is on the small side, just 4m sq, which the A19 fills with ease. Maybe an amp with a bit more oomph would make the music sing even more. And despite the extra power, still sound good when turned down low. Any thoughts?

When discussing amplifier power, the positives are rarely in connection with filling larger spaces, it’s usually about providing greater dynamics and control over the existing speakers. A good quality speaker will respond well to these improvements regardless of the size of the room or volume level. With regards to the pure analogue hi-fi amplifiers I can offer, that currently comes down to Norma Audio, YBA, and Exposure: www.thelittleaudiocompany.co.uk/analogue-hifi-amplifiersI’m presuming you don’t want to go too crazy, which probably puts Norma out of touch as they start around £2,600 for the modular IPA1. YBA currently kick in at £1500, and Exposure at £1100 - none of them have an integral phono stage. I’ve not found any of these to offer anything offensive sounding (in relation to your ‘warmth’ comment), but I guess that might partly come down to the speakers being used - can you remind me what you have? Despite being easy to listen to, you should find anynof these will give a slightly livelier presentation.

Thank you for that, I'll have a look at your website to check out the amps you mention.

Most of the amplifiers I do tend to have an onboard DAC. With one or two it’s an option, but not many.
