My all time favourite horror film, by my all time favourite director of horror films John Carpenter, based in the novella, Who Goes There? By John W. Campbell, written in 1938.
Where to start with this film. There’s so much to it, and so many unanswered questions you could debate numerous aspects for years.
Everything about it oozes quality. A great cast of actors, an amazingly convincing set that was built 6 months before filming so it would “snow in” for the winter, a fantastically creepy score by Ennio Morricone, some amazing matte painting backdrops by the late Albert Whitlock, and the jaw dropping special effects by Rob Bottin, who was in his early 20s at the time, and are still a benchmark for other ‘non CGI’ effects almost 40 years later.
I usually watch this twice a year, although I did watch it a couple of weeks ago despite only having watched it in May, purely because I wanted the experience again. I could watch this every month.
10/10

Superb film, I haven't actually seen it for years though, I used to have a VHS copy (I've probably still got it somewhere), I think I'll try to get hold of at least a DVD, thanks for the reminder. How many films are you up to now this year? Or have you lost count

According to my Letterboxd account, 385.
You can get the normal Bluray pretty cheap nowadays, which is far better than the DVD. I always remember watching the VHS when I was a kid, totally unaware that Copper had a nose ring - VHS’ resolution wasn’t good enough to show it! Or at least it wasn’t good enough to draw your attention enough to it to notice. I think I noticed on DVD, and even on DVD, it’s hard to tell sometimes.
