Anyone out there got an LG TV?
I’ve been at a friend’s house over the last few days who has an LG TV, and we watched a few films. When the film started, I could tell straight away he had the motion smoothing on (higher picture refresh rate) - the feature that removes judder and makes everything look silky smooth. I told him I couldn’t watch it and could we turn it off. We went through all the settings and couldn’t find anywhere we could do so. A little googling for his TV model came up with a site that said his TV has a native 120Hz panel. This should mean that the picture on the TV is updated 120 times per second.
My question is - is there a setting on LG TVs to turn this off that we didn’t find?
Because if not, it means that you cannot watch a film in its natural frame rate of 24 frames per second (where the picture refreshes 24 times per second)! To me, this is a MAJOR fail. Watching “film” at higher refresh rates makes it look like video (which is usually 50 or 60 frames per second), which also has a smoother look to it than film. An example of how video looks is the News At Ten, Doctor Who, or anything shot in a studio. Film looks totally different, but at the higher refresh rates looks similar, which in my opinion, is wrong.
If this is true, I want to know if it is true of all LG TVs, or of it is true of all OLED TVs. If it is, then as a film fan, there is no way in hell I’ll ever buy an OLED TV.
Can anyone enlighten me?
