I have recently re-watched two of my all-time favourite films: Three Days of the Condor and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Two very different films, and both a bit of their time, but both intelligent, well-made films. Any of you know them/like them ?

If I watched films I haven’t seen before rather than re-watching films, I’d have seen a hell of a lot more films than I actually have. Sorry, not seen those, might’ve seen T&L when I was very young. Great cast.

Recently purchased Blu-ray of the original Ealing comedy 'The Lady Killers'. It's one film I never tire of watching. 'Brighton Rock' is another classic, with Sir Dicky Attenborough.

Good call on The Lady Killers pp, I recently bought an Ealing comedies box set which included that one and more of my old favourites: The Titfield Thunderbolt and Passport To Pimlico, such a shame nobody makes films like these any more, they were of their time I guess.

P.s. I'll try to check out Brighton Rock, amazingly, I've never seen it.

P.s. I'll try to check out Brighton Rock, amazingly, I've never seen it. Attenborough played the menacing Pinkie Brown. It's one of those 'must see before you die' type of films.

Never seen Brighton Rock - I suppose growing up, the title never caught me, and never knew what it was about. I wouldn’t even have recognised a Richard Attenborough! Earliest film I recall seeing him in is 10 Rillington Place, which was about 23 years after Brighton Rock. I’ll have to hunt down a good Bluray master.

Think I have a fetish for old British B&W films. Few more of my favourites:
Hell Drivers: Load of famous actors: Gordon Jackson, Stanley Baker, Patrick McGoohan, Sean Connery, Sid James, David McCallum, William Hartnell...
Brief Encounter, starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. Cottage to let - from the 40s starring a very young George Cole (Flash Harry from the early St. Trinian films and Arthur Daley out of Minder). It also stars John Mills as a double spy. Fabulous film. Just makes you want to smile.

Looks like a good cast for Hell Drivers.

Keep 'em coming pp, I'm a fan of b&w films too, especially wartime films Went The Day Well? is a superb war film. The village used in the film was Turville in Buckimghamshire. It's the same village where the Vicar Of Bibley and Goodnight Mister Tom was located. One of all time fav films from the 40s - yet it isn't actually a film as such. There's no actors, just ordinary people filmed during one night in the Blitz.

I think I've seen Went The Day Well, great film, I wouldn't mind seeing London can take it, I'm sure it's an interesting historical account of the blitz, from my cozy lounge I can barely appreciate the horror and destruction during that time.
I just remembered another film I quite like: Very Important Person starring James Robertson Justice, Lesley Philips, Stanley Baxter and many others, it's a 1961 comedy mostly set in a prisoner of war camp following the attempts of Mr Justice's to escape.

I don't think any of us can fully grasp the full horror of the Blitz. That's why films like 'London Can Take It' are so important. Another propaganda film well worth checking out is 'Coastal Command', which, again, is a very good insight into the crews of the flying boats. All the actors were serving aircrews. Have good reason to like this film: My dad flew with flying boat crews for two years. That said, this film is full of "that was a wizard prang...". Priceless. Another good'un: 'One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing', and stars a very young Peter Ustinov.

That's really interesting about your dad pp, the closest I got to a Catalina was making an Airfix kit with my dad when I was a kid, it was my favourite aeroplane for quite a while too.

There's still a flying Catalina, which is based at IWM Duxford. It was restored by one of the on-site aeronautical specialists.
